How big is a Hummingbird?

A Hummingbird is 100 millimeters

Intriguing Hummingbirds: A Closer Look at Their Size

Have you ever wondered about the size of the hummingbird, one of nature’s most vibrant and lively creatures? Hummingbirds, part of the Trochilidae family, are among the smallest birds in the world. They are native to the Americas, with about 366 species found from Alaska all the way down to Tierra del Fuego. However, most of them call Central and South America home. Despite their small size, hummingbirds are known for their rapid, maneuverable flight and exceptional metabolic capacity.

Size Comparison: How Big is a Hummingbird?

When it comes to size, hummingbirds are truly unique. They are the smallest mature birds, with an average length of only 7.5–13 cm (3–5 in). To imagine how small that is, consider this:

  • They are smaller than your average teacup, which is usually about 9.5 cm (3.75 in) tall.
  • They are just about the length of a standard business card, which is around 8.9 cm (3.5 in) long.
  • Their length is roughly the same as the width of a dollar bill, which is about 15.5 cm (6.14 in). The smallest hummingbird is the bee hummingbird. It measures a mere 5 cm (2.0 in) — roughly the size of a large bumblebee — and weighs less than 2.0 g (0.07 oz). That’s lighter than a single penny! On the other end of the hummingbird size spectrum is the giant hummingbird. It measures up to 23 cm (9.1 in) and can weigh between 18–24 grams (0.63–0.85 oz). That’s about the size of a large tomato and the weight of four to five AA batteries.

The Distinctive Features of Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are not just famous for their small size. They have several distinctive features that set them apart:

  • Fast and Agile Flight: Hummingbirds are known for their rapid, maneuverable flight. They can hover in mid-air, fly forwards, backwards, and even upside down!
  • Exceptional Metabolic Capacity: These birds have a high metabolism, meaning they need to eat a lot. A hummingbird can consume up to half its body weight in food per day!
  • Long Beaks and Vibrant Plumage: Hummingbirds are known for their long, thin beaks, which they use to drink nectar from flowers. Male hummingbirds are also renowned for their brilliantly colored plumage, especially in hues of blues, greens, and purples. In conclusion, hummingbirds are fascinating creatures. Despite their small size — or perhaps because of it — they are some of the most distinctive birds in the world. Their vibrant colors, rapid flight, and remarkable adaptations make them a joy to observe and study.

Chicken Egg
The chicken egg is where baby chicks usually hatch. Many humans love to eat chicken eggs. Besides appearance, there is no difference between white chicken eggs and brown chicken eggs.
Matchstick
The matchstick is a very useful little tool. When struck against something, it can light on fire. This makes it very dangerous! That's why it's good to never play with matches. Got that?
Common Earthworm
Don't you just love wriggly, slimy earthworms? Despite the urban legends, most species of earthworms will die if you cut them in half. Sometimes, the clitellum will survive and grow a new tail.

Largest Hailstone
The largest hailstone was found in South Dakota. However, most hailstones don't even come close to this size. The average diameter is a measly centimeter. Oh, I would also like to point out that not all hailstones are round.
Basketball
This basketball is probably a size 7 basketball, because a size 6 basketball is only 23 centimeters in diameter. This basketball, which is very round, is often pushed through a hoop.
Russell's Teapot
Bertrand Russell said that there was a teapot orbiting the Sun between Earth and Mars. No one could disprove him because such a teapot would be too tiny to see so far away. Even though the teapot's existence could not be disproven, it seems illogical to believe it exists.
