If we were to line up this distance end to end, it would take approximately 24.68 million moons to equal a light-year. As you can see, a light-year is an incredibly long distance, far beyond what we normally experience in our day-to-day lives.

Light-Years in Astronomy In the world of astronomy, light-years are very useful for talking about distances between stars and galaxies. For example, our closest star, Proxima Centauri, is about 4.22 light-years away. This means the light we see from that star today actually left Proxima Centauri over four years ago. Isn’t that amazing?

Sometimes, astronomers use a different unit called a parsec, which is about 3.26 light-years. But for most of us, light-years are easier to understand and imagine.
