The Whirlpool Galaxy is a bit smaller, with a diameter of about 76,900 light-years. That’s a little over three-quarters the size of the Milky Way!

  • The Whirlpool Galaxy was the first galaxy to be classified as a spiral galaxy. Its beautiful, spinning shape is what gave it the name ‘Whirlpool.’ - It lies in the constellation Canes Venatici, which means ‘hunting dogs’ in Latin. This constellation is named after the hunting dogs of Bootes, the Herdsman, a constellation nearby. - The Whirlpool Galaxy is not alone! It has a companion galaxy, NGC 5195. These two galaxies are interacting with each other, which is a fancy way of saying they are pulling on each other with their gravity. This interaction is what gives the Whirlpool Galaxy its grand, spiraling shape. - Even though the Whirlpool Galaxy is millions of light-years away (between 23 and 31 million to be exact), it can be seen with a good pair of binoculars. This makes it a favorite target for both professional astronomers and amateur stargazers.
