How Big is TrES-4b?

  • TrES-4b is nearly 1.7 times the size of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. If Jupiter were the size of a basketball, TrES-4b would be a massive exercise ball! - Despite its massive size, TrES-4b is less massive than Jupiter. This means it’s a lot lighter than you would expect for its size. It’s like a giant celestial balloon floating through space. - TrES-4b is even larger than some of the other colossal exoplanets like WASP-12b, WASP-17b, CT Chamaeleontis b, GQ Lupi b, and HD 100546 b.

Where Does TrES-4b Reside?

Now, let’s find out where this enormous planet is located. TrES-4b orbits a star called GSC 02620-00648, which is approximately 1,400 light-years away from us. This means that if you could travel at the speed of light, it would take you 1,400 years to get there! This star is located in the constellation Hercules, which is visible from many parts of the Earth during the summer months.

What’s So Special About TrES-4b?

Apart from its size, here are a few more interesting facts about TrES-4b:

  • TrES-4b is a ‘Hot Jupiter’. This means it’s similar to Jupiter in some ways but is much hotter because it orbits very close to its star. - Despite its close proximity to its star, TrES-4b is not very dense. It’s even less dense than water! If we could find a cosmic bathtub big enough, TrES-4b would float! - The planet was discovered using the transit method, where scientists observe a tiny dimming in the star’s light as the planet passes in front of it.
