Imagine a patch of green, either lush grass or artificial turf, stretching out in front of you. Now, picture it being so long that it would take you about 100 steps to walk from one end to the other, and so wide that you’d need about 53 steps to cross it. That’s the size of a football field!
The dimensions of a football field are indeed impressive. The playing field itself, not counting the end zones, is 100 yards long. If you’re more comfortable with meters, that’s roughly 91.44 m. The width is a bit more than half of its length, measuring 160 feet or about 48.8 m. But that’s not all. There are also end zones on either side of the playing field. Each of these extends another 10 yards (approximately 9.144 m) past the goal lines to the “end lines”. This makes the total length of the official field, including the end zones, 120 yards or about 109.7 m. If you want to know the total area of a football field, you’d multiply the length by the width. Doing that gives you an astonishing 57,600 square feet or 5,350 square meters!
Now, if you’re finding it hard to visualize how big a football field is, let’s compare it to some objects or places you might be familiar with.
The football field isn’t just about its size. There’s more to it that makes it special. Let’s look at some of these features:
