Even though Brunei is small in size, it has a big history. Some people believe that at the height of the Bruneian Empire, Sultan Bolkiah, who reigned from 1485–1528, had control over most regions of Borneo. This includes areas that are now part of Malaysia and Indonesia. The maritime state of Brunei was even visited by Spain’s Magellan Expedition in 1521. However, during the 19th century, the Bruneian Empire began to decline. It ceded some of its territories to British control, and in 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate. After World War II, Brunei gained its independence and has been led by the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah since 1967.

Brunei Today

Today, Brunei might be small, but it’s mighty. The country has developed vast wealth from its extensive petroleum and natural gas fields. Brunei has the second-highest Human Development Index among Southeast Asian nations, after Singapore. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Brunei is ranked fifth in the world by gross domestic product per capita. The IMF estimated in 2011 that Brunei was one of two countries (the other being Libya) with a public debt at 0% of the national GDP. In conclusion, Brunei is a small country with a vast history and a prosperous present. It’s a place where size doesn’t define its worth or accomplishments.
